Pearl of the Caribbean
Barbados enjoys 340 days of sunshine a year, well-developed amenities, a pulsating nightlife and friendly inhabitants, making it one of the most desirable Caribbean holiday destinations.
Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island. It has been dubbed ‘pearl of the Caribbean’ and 'the real fantasy island', which are nods to its exotic holiday resorts and glorious beaches, though Barbados is in fact an enormous and ancient coral reef formed a million years ago. The small, pear-shaped island, just 20 miles (32km) long, is a stretch of soft coral permeated by water, which over the years has resulted in the formation of fascinating underground caverns.
The islanders – who call themselves Bajans – are West Indian by descent, although largely shaped by English colonial custom and culture. English influences are found all over the island, most evident in the Anglican stone churches and the islander’s love of cricket, which they play on village greens.
