Budapest - historic exciting city that boasts splendour and beauty

Budapest is the largest city, capital and leading commercial centre of Hungary. Divided by the Danube River, Buda and Pest were originally two cities, but in 1873 they were officially joined to form Budapest.

The Buda section of the city is Budapest’s historic quarter featuring the majority of the city’s cultural attractions. Explore on a city break to Budapest, the Castle District which is a romantic little medieval town that is entwined with atmospheric streets, picturesque houses and beautiful monuments. The Royal Palace, Trinity Square and Fisherman’s Bastion are also some of Buda’s most popular attractions. The hilly landscape offers magnificent views of the River Danube and Pest side of the city opposite.

In contrast, the Pest section of Budapest embraces modern life and activity through the various shopping areas and entertainment venues.Discover the famous Vörösmarty Square that holds two of the city’s most popular cafés, Old Gerbeaud and the trendy Art Café. Take a trip to Margit Island,which is situated in the middle of the River Danube, and relax,walk or cycle in the 100 hectares of beautiful uninterrupted parkland.Visit the various museums, parliament buildings and the famous Grand Market Hall.

Budapest Christmas markets

The Budapest Christmas Fair is one of cities highlights of the year. The market is annualy held in Vorosmarty Square, one of the most beautiful in the city. With over 100 stalls, most of which offer unique hand crafted Hungarian produce from glassware, to sausages and everything in-between. Normally there is also stage area where you can watch Hungarian folk dancing, music and stage plays and for those that are hungry there is no shortage of thick hot ‘goulash’, pancakes and sweet savouries, not forgetting gluh(mulled wine.

The highlight of the market is the opening of the Gerbeaud Advent Calendar at 5.00pm each evening. The Gerbeaud building is annually transformed into an ‘advent calendar’, with all the windows depicting a christmas scene and opened each day up to Christmas day.
