A Vibrant City on the Mediterranean Coast
The fifth largest city in France, Nice occupies a 6 mile stretch of the Mediterranean coast. For 4 miles of this the impressive ‘Promenade des Anglais’ hugs the coast with its multi-laned esplanade with dedicated paths for joggers and roller-blading, regularly interspersed with seating for the less energetic. The crescent beach shelves steeply into the sea. Many private beach areas enjoy imported sand, the public areas consist mainly of smooth white pebbles and are patrolled by life guards. The old town boasts an elevated castle and most of Nice’s buildings of architectural beauty are found in this area, many dating back to the 17th and 18th century. The best of more modern architecture is to be found within a mile of the town centre where the luxury hotels of Nice’s grander past are located and the port has some handsome and harmonious 18th century buildings to view.
