From ancient history to sun, sand and clear azure seas – Cyprus has it all
Whether it’s mingling with the crowds or seeking isolation off the beaten track, on a Cyprus holiday you can do as you please – even in peak holiday season. Cyprus is a favourite honeymoon destination, a reputation enhanced by the Greek legend Aphrodite, goddess of love.
The beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus offers many holiday attractions all packed into a relatively small area. Not only does it Abound with good beaches and resorts, it’s also peppered with the relics of ancient history, from the beehive huts of primitive man to classical Greek and Roman ruins and everything else in between.
Cyprus’s charms make a magical holiday island. For a start, the weather is sunny and dry almost all year round, and enticing clear blue seas encircle the island. Staying in a modern luxury hotel by the sea, there’s not far to travel to find a historic restored city to explore, picturesque mountain villages, monasteries, churches and Crusader castles, fascinating museums, and tavernas and nightlife aplenty. The local people are extremely welcoming, happy to share their camaraderie and innate love of life.
Cyprus’s rich and vivid history dates back thousands of years. Its capital Nicosia (also known as Lefkosia) is split by the “green line” that spans the entire island. The green line – dividing north from south – is a United Nations peacekeeping buffer, created in 1974 when Turkish invaders took control of the northern part of the island. Although this political divide has not dampened Cyprus’s appeal as a holiday Mecca, the focus of tourist development has been in government-controlled southern Cyprus, which is the target destination for the majority of holiday-makers.
