America's year-round and most popular holiday destination

Florida is known as the Sunshine State – and with good reason. But sunshine isn’t its only appeal, as Florida offers holiday-makers first-class dining and accommodation, and attractions covering everything from space exploration to roller coasters, endangered wildlife and magnificent beaches.

Florida is a peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean in the south-eastern corner of the United States. Its coastline is indented with estuaries, bays, inlets, lagoons and rivers, creating ideal enclaves for the location of holiday resorts. The peninsula ends in an arc of islands – the Florida Keys – which rest on coral reefs. The southernmost island is Key West, reached by a highway crossing all the islands.

Many of Florida’s holiday attractions are man-made – the central part of the state, particularly round Tampa and Orlando, is a theme park paradise – and enticing venues offer thrill seekers everything from water slides to rollicking roller coasters. Themed animal habitats such as Sea World and Busch Gardens, and sites such as Disney World, draw thousands of people, many of whom stay in the hotels in these purpose-built resorts.

Miami, the largest city in Florida, has soft white sand beaches, and diverse and colourful neighbourhoods. Its famous Art Deco district and Latin American quarter are constantly thronged with visitors, many of them passengers from the cruise ships that come and go in the bustling port. Miami also provides access to the famous Everglades, a marshy grass plain resonating with wildlife – watch out for the alligators!
