Lesvos

Lesvos is one of the largest Greek islands, also known as Lesbos. The island differs from the rest of the Greek Islands as it is does not rely on the tourism trade for it's income and has olive growing and fishing industries as a main source of income. Despite being a popular summer holiday destination it remains unspoilt and natural, untainted by tourist trappings, and its size precludes it from becoming overcrowded or claustrophobic like some of the other Greek resort islands.

The island is located in the Aegean, close to Turkey with easy travel to the Ionian Islands like Thessalonika, Athens, Kos and Rhodes by both air and sea. Lesvos is an enchanting island with pale sandy beaches and pretty fishing villages, the islands interior is filled with lush olive groves and as the island is penetrated by two gulfs the coastlines are warm and sheltered. Lesvos's main town is called Mytilene, which houses thirty thousand inhabitants around the well preserved Byzantine castle in the centre of town and Lesvos holidays are popular due to it's quaint villages and beautiful beaches.

The cultural and historical opportunities in Lesvos are rich and varied as the island has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and rose to glory particularly around the 6th century BC when it was rivalled only by Athens as a great centre of civilisation, home to the legendary poets Sappho and Alcaeus.

Holidays in Lesvos offer an insight into the deep history of the island and the serenity of this beautiful lush island with its balmy Mediterranean climate.
