The ancient port and island capital of Kos Town has been subject to much development over recent years, and new apartment blocks stretch out well into its surrounding suburbs. Nevertheless, it remains a fascinating and cosmopolitan town, its mix of culture and entertainment attracting thousands of holiday-makers each year.
The presence of Egyptian, Roman, Venetian and Ottoman rule is evident all over Kos Town. Highlights include the ruins of Roman baths and amphitheatre, and the 15th century castle built by the Knights of St John, which stands as a sentry to the town. The town’s shingle beach is fairly narrow, and packed with beach chairs and umbrellas. But nearby beaches are just a short bus journey away, and provide better facilities for holiday-makers – or take a boat trip to Turkey or the nearby islands.
Kos Town gets busy after dark, and there is no shortage of bars, restaurants, English-style cafes and local tavernas, especially around the old harbour area overlooking traditional fishing boats and sleek yachts.
