Los Gigantes (“the Giants”) is named after the high cliffs of Acantilados de los Gigantes that surround this attractive holiday resort. A concerted effort has been made not to destroy the natural beauty of the town, which is largely undeveloped – ideal for those who prefer wildlife to wild nights.
On Tenerife’s west coast and practically adjoining neighbouring Playa la Arena and Puerto Santiago, Los Gigantes provides holiday-makers with a varied resort experience. It might not be party central, but there is plenty to see and do year round.
The resort’s lovely upmarket marina has bars and restaurants where holiday-makers can enjoy a meal or a drink, or make it the starting point for a boat trip to explore the imposing cliff-faces, enjoy dolphin and whale watching excursions, or simply visit neighbouring resorts. Uphill from the marina is the resort's commercial centre, with plenty of shops and a pedestrianised zone.
The small beach at Los Gigantes has black volcanic sand with good swimming, water sports and activities such as big game fishing. A not-to-be-missed event in the town is the annual carnival, held in the week after Ash Wednesday. Hire a car, and you can discover the many interesting sights and sounds in the rest of the island, but be careful in Los Gigantes, with its narrow streets and confusing one-way system.
