The most enchanting of the Greek islands

Each year hundreds of visitors descend Kefalonia (or Cephalonia), keen to lie on quiet, windless beaches beneath steep cliffs that plunge into the sea, or to explore verdant mountainsides clad in the shadowy forests of this most enchanting Greek island.

Named after an ancient Greek hero and set in the centre of Ionian Sea, the island resort of Kefalonia has an excellent tourist infrastructure: visitors fly from Athens to the airport in the south of the island, or arrive by ferry from Patras and surrounding islands.

Visitors to Kefalonia are never at a loss for an entertaining way to spend their time. There are quaint villages, traditional fishing harbours, Roman ruins, architecturally marvellous churches and castles and magnificent views to discover.

In addition to some spectacular golden beaches, Kefalonia boasts numerous historic and natural attractions, such as the famous caves at Melissani where a subterranean lake reflects a kaleidoscope of gorgeous colours, and 'swallow holes' where seawater seems to disappear through the rock.

The beautiful city of Argostoli, this Greek island's capital since ancient times, was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, but fascinating archaeological and folk art museums still stand among the remains. The island's main town, Lixouri, is peaceful and picturesque, and close to the south coast where the best beaches are to be found.
