Family holidays on beautiful Greek island beaches
The Dodecanese island of Kos, easily reached by ferry from Rhodes or Turkey, offers a wide range of holiday amenities catering specifically to the tourist trade. With beautiful beaches and plentiful day-time activities, Kos is ideal for family holidays.
Holiday-makers interested in history and archaeology have much to explore on Kos, where there are archaeological remains of the Persian, Turkish, Roman and Byzantine conquerors of the island over the centuries. Indeed, Kos’s position as a place of retreat goes back to antiquity: the healing temple of Asclepius was founded after the death of Hippocrates, who is said to have taught students on the island in the shadow of a tree which is still standing and is reputed to be the oldest in Europe. The remains of temples dedicated to other healing deities, including Isis and Sarapis, can also be found.
Kos has busy bars and an entertaining nightlife, and there are some pleasant towns and beaches outside the capital, but those looking for empty beaches should head for quieter islands.
