Paphos is located on the south-western coast of Cyprus and was once the island’s capital. The city’s 39,500 inhabitants live mainly in the residential area of Ktima, while Kato Paphos – built around the medieval port with its numerous luxury hotels, tavernas and entertainment venues – is the playground of holiday-makers.
The legendary birthplace of the Greek goddess of love also has many connections to and relics from early Christianity. While it has survived both foreign incursions and even a devastating earthquake, Paphos has not fared well over the centuries. However, in a recent reversal of fortune it has begun to revive, its development as a tourist destination owing much to government investment in infrastructure, and private initiatives resulting in a boom in the construction of holiday hotels and villas.
