A sunny Greek island steeped in history
Once a medieval fortress protecting Christians from eastern invaders, Rhodes is still subject to invasion, but nowadays it is holiday-makers rather than heathens taking over the island.
Rhodes – reputedly the sunniest Greek island – is the main one of the 12 islands making up the Dodecanese group, close to Turkey and sitting at the point where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean.
In the north of the island, Rhodes Town’s picturesque walled old city is a playground for holiday-makers. Although the Colossus no longer guards the harbour, the old town still has plenty of wonders to offer and the newer areas are just as vibrant.
The rest of the relatively large island offers miles of beaches, interesting archaeological sites and natural beauty spots. The best beaches are on the east coast between Faliraki and Lindos, a picturesque town and protected historic settlement.
